Old look for new Shogun

No we haven’t got the wrong photos - this really is the next-generation Mitsubishi Shogun, which will be at the Paris show in three weeks' time.

The tough off-roader’s metal has been conservatively changed, retaining the look of the last car, because Mitsubishi hasn’t got the cash to produce a completely new model. The major developments have been under the bonnet and in the cabin.

Power comes either from a new 3.2-litre four-cylinder common-rail diesel or a 3.8-litre V6 petrol. The diesel is one of the biggest four-pots we can think of in a car, beating rival Toyota’s 3.0-litre Land Cruiser unit for capacity, but with no figures available it remains to be seen how it compares for performance.

Inside, there is a sorely needed new dashboard, a 12-speaker sound system and a 30Gb hard-disk navigation system, which can also store music.

The Shogun is sold in a massive 170 markets worldwide, but curiously not in the US. It goes on sale in the UK early next year.
