New Vauxhall Corsa is go

Vauxhall brought its own crowd for the launch of the new Corsa this morning at the British motor show, with a crew of MTV-style dancing, skateboarding teens welcoming the new car.

It’s all part of GM’s wish for us to see the Corsa as cool. Designer Nills Loeb said it was deigned to have “sufficient street cred without polarising opinion.”

Only time will tell if Loeb has achieved his aims, but the new supermini is certainly likely to be popular, with prices starting at just £7495 for the three-door 1.0 Expression model.

You get plenty for your money, too, with a CD sound system, twin dual-stage front airbags, anti-lock brakes with emergency brake assist, electric door mirrors, central locking and speed-sensitive power steering standard across the range.

Vauxhall says the new Corsa is cheaper and better-equipped than its predecessor, with the most popular 1.2-litre five-door Life model coming in at £9395 - £945 less than before.

A neat design touch is the Corsa's Flexfit system, first seen on the Opel Trixx concept car, which allows, say, a bike rack to be attached to the rear of the car via a bumper mounting point.

As with the Astra, the three-door Corsa has a sportier look than its five-door sibling, but the sportiest engine currently available is a 1.4-litre 16v unit. A souped-up VXR is in the pipeline.

The new Corsa is on sale now, with first deliveries in October.
