California’s famous Pebble Beach golf course played host to the annual Concours d’Elegance over the weekend. As well as featuring some of the world’s most expensive and collectible classic cars, the show also played host to significant world debuts of modern-day machinery.

Chief among the new car launches was the new Lexus GS, which previews the company’s new styling direction. It will reach the UK in early 2012 after another appearance at the Frankfurt motor show.

Infiniti was the main sponsor of Pebble Beach this year and it brought two new cars with it: a new JX seven-seat SUV and a facelift for the FX SUV. Neither will be coming to the UK, however. Nissan’s luxury arm also confirmed an IPL version of the G convertible would make production, too.

Other concepts included Lotus’s new Evora GTE, a race car-inspired version of the Evora that’s road legal. The Norfolk firm was shown alongside a special Final Edition of the Exige, which is being phased out in its current guise.

Elsewhere, Cadillac’s dramatic Ciel concept mixed modern-day luxury with the firm’s heritage, although it won’t be making production.

There was also a North American debut for the new 1350bhp SSC Tuatara concept. A production version will follow in 2013, when the car will embark on a quest to set a lap record at the Nurburgring for a production car.

The ‘Best in Show’ award at the 2011 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance went to a 1934 Voisin C-25 Aerodyne. Only 25 examples of the C-25 were ever produced by Voisin, a European engineering form which also manufactured aircrafts.
