Success of the i40 could see Hyundai introduce the Genesis, Equus and Genesis Coupe in the UK

The success of Hyundai's new Mondeo-rivalling i40 estate could lead to the introduction of the firm’s 5-series- and 7-series-sized saloons.

The i40, revealed at Geneva last week, is the firm’s first car to launch under its ‘modern premium’ philosophy, offering “all the credentials of a premium car but an affordable price”.

Hyundai’s UK managing director Tony Whitehorn told Autocar that the next generation of its Genesis and Equus saloons could find their way into UK showrooms as buyers got used to the idea of Hyundai offering premium products at affordable prices.

“We need to be careful with our product launches,” he said. “You can’t just go from budget to premium; you have to take it slowly and communicate what we’re doing to buyers.”

Hyundai’s big Genesis Coupe could also find its way into the UK in its next iteration as a halo car for the brand. The next Genesis Coupe will be offered with right-hand drive, opening it up to potential markets including the UK, Australia and India.
