New 2.2-litre engine makes S-class 'first luxury car to dip under 150g/km'

Mercedes has revealed its new S250 CDI BlueEfficiency, which the company claims is the most fuel-efficient production luxury car, at the Paris motor show.

It achieves a fuel economy of 48mpg on the combined cycle and emits 149g/km of CO2, which Mercedes claims makes it the first in its class to dip under the 150g/km mark.

It is the first S-class to be given a four-cylinder diesel in the model’s 60-year history.

The 2.2-litre unit mated G-Tronic Plus 7-speed automatic transmission gives 201bhp and 369lb ft of torque at 1600rpm.

It will power the S250CDI from 0-60 in 8.2 seconds and a top speed of 149mph.

This is made possible by the standard-fit ECO stop-start technology and high torque at low engine speeds achieved through two-stage turbocharging – from one high-pressure and one low-pressure turbocharger.

The new engine is part of a new range of four new petrol and diesel engines for the S-class. The other diesel, in the S350 BlueTEC, is a V6 which delivers 255bhp and emits 177 g/km of CO2.

It's funny to see this today. I work in Mayfair and walking around my office there are countless S-classes, 7-series, A8s, and spatterings of Flying Spurs and the odd Phantom. I was actually thinking that given that a large number of these will never venture out of say zone 2, whether there would be a market for say an S220 CDI

I should charge Mercedes a royalty...

this will only be of interest to the luxury taxi market

Yes, but that will please Mercedes UK.

While approx 50% of global S class sales are the S500, in the UK about 80% of S Class sales are the diesel (despite only 1 diesel engine in UK up to now), largely to the "posh taxi" market. This version will reinforce Mercedes position in this relatively large part of the luxury car market nicely.

This is the way to go with ever more stringent emissions regulations.I mean how many would ask you if its a four or six cylinder S Class you drive??
