The new Subaru Coupe will be given more power than its Toyota sibling, as these spy pics reveal

These spy pictures reveal Subaru’s plans to equip its upcoming rear-wheel-drive coupé with a turbocharged 2.5-litre engine.

A cut-and-shut Impreza body covers the modified Legacy platform with Impreza rear suspension of the test mule spied in Death Valley.

It has been spied before at the Nürburgring, but its bonnet scoop is new and our spy photographer said a front-mounted intercooler was visible through an opening in the front grille.

Subaru sources in Japan have previously told Autocar that the unnamed coupé will use a 260bhp version of the Impreza WRX STI’s turbocharged 2.5-litre flat four.

This will give it more power than its co-developed Toyota FT-86 sibling, which will use Subaru’s naturally aspirated 2.0-litre flat four with around 200bhp. Both cars will use a six-speed manual gearbox.

The decision to use Impreza bodywork also hints that the coupé could draw some of its styling inspiration from the hatchback, in particular at the front end.

Subaru intends to make its coupé the more aggressive of the pair; both will share similar body panels, but each will get its own bumpers, front grilles and wheels.Read the full story on the Toyota FT-86, plus see pics and video

Re: Subaru's FT-86 to get 260bhp

So, this is just a Subaru Legacy GT from overseas but made into a two door coupe form. If they can make this, why can't they import the Legacy GT too?

Given a rallye road, with good, smooth tarmac (although not track smooth), if you want to choose a car, with the only criteria as pleasure (ie focus and ride & handling, steering feel, noise...), forget about acceleration, power and grip, which one of these would be the greatest?
