First spy pictures of Chevrolet's new supermini

These are the first spy pictures of Chevrolet’s new Aveo supermini.

The new Aveo was revealed as the Chevrolet Aveo RS hot hatch concept at last week’s Detroit motor show and development is believed to be at an advanced stage. The new car set to reach UK showrooms within the year.

Many of the radical styling features seen in the concept don’t feature on the development car. The doors are less sculpted, the ride height is higher and the wheels are smaller, although the heavy disguise at the front and rear ensures little else is given away about the production car’s styling.

The RS show car’s rear door handles were hidden away in its C-pillars but the disguise doesn’t show whether these are being carried forward for production. The sleek front handles from the concept are replaced by more conventional ones in the development car.

The concept’s high beltline and low roofline remain, however, which should give the new Aveo a sportier overall profile.

Our spies also captured the interior of the car. This takes some styling cues from the Vauxhall Astra and Chevrolet Cruze models, including the wraparound-stlye interior, steering wheel and some of the instrument controls.

Chevrolet sources have previously told Autocar that the RS model from Detroit could be available from launch. The car will also be sold in the US, where production will begin at GM’s Orion plant later in 2010.
