BMW Z4 sDrive35is powered by 3.0-litre straight six

This is the new range-topping BMW Z4, launched today at the Detroit motor show.

The snappily titled Z4 sDrive 35is gets a 335bhp version of the 3.0-litre straight six, with an overboost function increasing torque from 332lb ft to 369lb ft. And the 332lb ft is available from just 1400rpm, which should give the car the torque characteristics of a big diesel.

That gives the Z4 performance to closely match the M3 and M5; it hits 62mph in 4.8sec. As with all BMWs, top speed is limited to 155mph. Transmission is a seven-speed double-clutch unit.

The car also has the sound to match its performance. BMW describes its specially developed exhaust, which features sound flaps and modifications to the silencers, as giving "powerful acoustic feedback".

The new model makes use of Efficient Dynamics tech, including brake enegy regeneration and electric power steering, to average 31.4mpg, and it emits 210g/km of CO2.

The car also gets an M Sports Package and M suspension as standard, which lowers the car by 10mm, and retuned electric steering. Exterior trim changes include new front and rear lower bumpers and a new style of 18-inch alloys. Regardless of the exterior colour of the car, it will always be supplied with silver mirror caps.

The BMW Z4 sDrive 35is will go on sale in the spring. No prices have been announced.

BMW Z4
The BMW Z4 has more comfort and added practicality, but has it gone soft?

The BMW Z4 is a fine-looking two-seat roadster with indifferent driving dynamics

It would be nice if a proper manual, and a proper auto become available.

Doubtful. I don't think they would want a Z4M to supersede in the M3 in the performance department then undercut it in price. M3 owners would throw a right tantrum.

Re: Hot BMW Z4 revealed

I love the Z4 but I hope there is an option for nicer wheels compared to those ones.
