One of 75 competition GT4s is on sale in the US

A rare Aston Martin DB4 GT is going up for auction in the US in January.

The DB4 GT for sale is the last of the 75 competition DB4s built between 1959 and 1963. The road car was unveiled at the Paris Salon in 1958, with the competition version following at the London motor show a year later.

The GT version was made shorter, lighter and more powerful than the base car. Power from its 3.7-litre alloy engine was increased to 302bhp from 240bhp, which made it the most powerful British car of its era.

The wheelbase of the GT was 13cm shorter than the DB4 road car and its weight was reduced by around 90kg. It could get from 0-60mph in 6.1sec and go on to reach a top speed of more than 150mph.

The DB4 GT used a steel monocoque chassis with coil-spring suspension and disc brakes all round.

The car was originally built at Aston’s Newport Pagnell Factory. Of the 75 examples built, 45 were supplied in right-hand drive.

The Aston Martin DB4 GT up for sale has competed in races at Watkins Glen, Road Atalanta and Laguna Seca, as well as several road rallies and tours on the American west coast.

It will be for sale at RM Auctions’ January sale in Scottsdale, Arizona and is expected to fetch around $1 million (£605,000).

Re: Rare Aston DB4 GT for auction

It was supposed to stop flies splattering the windscreen at speed. Not sure how well it worked, I've read that it was more of a fashionable option of the time rather than being particularily useful. Obviously the race cars didn't have them to reduce drag.
