Gullwing concept launched at the Tokyo motor show

This is the Subaru Hybrid Tourer Concept, which has been unveiled at the Tokyo motor show.

The Subaru concept gets striking gullwing doors, while it has been designed to be as aerodynamic as possible with a bright, airy interior.

Inside, it gets a luxurious interior with four individual seats covered in a mesh material similar to those seen in the Ford Iosis Max concept at Geneva earlier this year.

Its hybrid powertrain powers all four wheels and it consists of a 2.0-litre horizontally opposed direct injection turbocharged petrol engine and two electric motors – a 10kw one at the front, and a 20kw one at the rear. It uses lithium-ion batteries.

At low speeds, the rear electric motor is primarily used to boost efficiency, while the conventional engine is used at motorway and cruising speeds.

Under acceleration, the rear electric motor supports the petrol engine to provide increased performance. The front motor is mainly used to assist on hills.

A stop-start system also features to boost economy, as does regenerative braking.

How Subaru can design something as attractive as this and at the same time bring out the mess that is the new Legacy, I don't know.

I don't think Subaru did design it. I think Pininfarina designed it, and it's currently on sale as the Alfa Brera.
