Volkswagen has unveiled its new three-door Polo at the Frankfurt motor show next month.

The five-door model has already been launched, and the three-door model follows similar design traits. More pronounced rear windows feature to give the car a more aggressive stance, which VW claims makes the three-door Polo look lower and wider than it actually is.

It uses the same platform and has the same dimensions as the five-door model, but its will be larger and more spacious than the outgoing three-door model.

Standard equipment offered on all four trim levels – S, SE, Moda and SEL – includes four airbags, ABS, ESP and hydraulic brake assist, as well as a CD player, speed sensitive power steering and electric windows.

In SE trim, three-door Polos get full iPod connectivity, 15-inch alloys and body coloured door handles and mirrors.

Equipment on the top-spec SEL includes 16-inch alloy wheels, foglights, a multifunction computer and leather trim on the handbrake, steering wheel and gearshift.

At launch, two diesel and four petrol engines will be available. Two normally aspirated 1.2-litre petrol engines will be available with 59bhp and 69bhp, as well as a 1.4-litre unit with 84bhp.

Two common-rail 1.6-litre TDI engines are available with 74bhp and 89 bhp, while the flagship engine is a new 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine, which produces 104bhp.

Prices start at £9400 for a three-door Polo in S trim, rising to £14,000 for the SEL model.

Yawn. "...which VW claims..." Journalism at it's finest, eh? VW, social wannabe nonsense.

Might one suggest the Fabia / Ibiza?

Better still go for a Mazda 2 and if you like the dullness of the Polo go for the venerable Yaris as it will just be such a sweeter ownership experience.

Only thing that gets me is 59BHP in a car with such grown up talents is really not good enough in 2009. The chaeper brands can get away with it but it seems like blatent penny pinching from VW to me...
