Apollo Speed claims fastest ever production car lap time

Gumpert is claiming a new production road car lap record at the Nurburgring - even though it is slower than the record time set by a road-legal Radical.

The Gumpert Apollo Sport set a time of 7m11.57sec, driven by world touring car championship driver Florian Gruber.

The car was powered by a 700bhp version of Audi’s 4.2 V8, specially developed by Gumpert to accommodate twin turbochargers. As a result, it could travel from 0-124mph in 8.9sec.

The Gumpert Apollo Sport has a full steel tubular space-frame chassis and integrated carbonfibre monocoque.

The Sport edition adds a full aero package consisting of front and rear spoilers and a GT rear wing, as well as some roadgoing comforts such as an Alcantara interior and air conditioning.

The Gumpert Apollo Sport costs 300,000 euros (£258,000).

Although the Apollo's time beats the claimed efforts of the Dodge Viper SRT-10 and Nissan GTR, Radical is still claiming its ‘roadgoing’ SR8's time of 6m55sec is the fastest ever production car lap.
