Essex-built roadster will be priced from £25k; deliveries start in March

MM Industries, the new owner of the Strathcarron sports car business, has released more photographs and details on its re-enlivened lightweight British roadster, the Avocet. The car appeared at the two trade days of the Autosport International show last week, but was removed before the event opened to the public. It will launch to the public later this year. The Avocet will be built in Brentwood, south Essex, and will feature standard Ford componentry (making it affordable and easy to maintain). It will be available in a choice of two models: the 2.0-litre 145bhp Duratec-engined Avocet 150, which will be priced at £25,000, and the uprated 221bhp Mountune-engined Avocet 225, priced at £28,000.With an all-up weight of around 700kg, the more powerful of the two models will have an Elise-humbling 305bhp-per-tonne, and is capable of hitting 60mph in 4.6sec, 100mph in 12.2sec, and is limited to a 135mph top speed.MM Industries hasn't only changed the design and the engine of the Strathcarron; it has also made a significant structural change to the car by turning its bodyshell into a one-piece doorless construction, to the benefit of strength and rigidity. Suspension is all-independent at the front, and by a De Dion axle at the rear. Carbon ceramic brake discs and a hardtop roof are available as optional extras.MMI has already placed an order for a limited initial production run of the Avocet, and the first customer cars will be delivered in March. It expects to build 50 cars this year. For more information visit www.mmisportscars.net.
