MG Motor UK has confirmed its entry into this year's British Touring Car Championship with the MG 6

MG Motor UK has signed double touring car champion Jason Plato to spearhead its new three-year assault on the British Touring Car Championship.

The manufacturer will join the series with two five-door MG6 GT cars run under the auspices of the MG KX Momentum Racing team. The cars will be prepared by Triple Eight Race Engineering, which successfully ran the factory Vauxhall squad for many years.

Plato – champion with Vauxhall in 2001 and Chevrolet in 2010 – will be joined by Andy Neate, who last year drove a Team Aon Ford Focus in the BTCC.

Plato said: “It’s really exciting to be involved in a brand-new all-British team and it’s just brilliant that the iconic name of MG will be back on the track.”

Guy Jones, MG Motor’s Sales and Marketing Director, said: “We are delighted that the new MG 6 will be seen by millions of fans in Britain and beyond and this continues the famous sporting lineage of the brand.”

The first round of this year’s Dunlop MSA BTCC takes place at Brands Hatch on April 1.

I wish MG well - all new manufacturers must be welcomed into Motor Sport.

Plato is amusing - his rants last year on the turbo Civics were highly amusing, especially as he enjoyed a quite ridiculous advantage in previous seasons with his DERV powered Seat. He was unusually quite that year!!

Not sure if its occurred to those extolling the merits of MG popularity to improving UK balance of payments that Honda's UK built Civic is quite likely to contribute far more.

I wish Honda well with the new Civic and hope they continue to frustrate the hell out of Mr Plato in his (very personal) battle with Matt Neal - great television!!
