Ford's new three-pot petrol, 1.0-litre petrol engine produces up to 123bhp

A new UK-designed 1.0-litre, three-cylinder engine that can dramatically cut the emissions of a Ford Focus to just 109g/km was unveiled in Cologne today by Ford chief Alan Mulally. The turbocharged, direct injection unit, available in power levels of either 98bhp or 123bhp, will go on sale in the Focus next year, and will also feature in the new Ford C-Max, Grand C-Max and B-Max.

Made mostly from aluminium alloy, this is Ford’s smallest engine but it is destined to be one of its most significant. It will be built at first in Cologne on a new £110 million production line designed by Ford’s engineers in Dagenham and Dunton, but production will also begin soon in Craiova, Romania.

When it hits its stride, European production should top 700,000 units, while wordwide production should reach 1.5 million units.
