German reports suggest Toyota could build cars on 2018 Mercedes A- and B-class platforms

Toyota has denied reports in the German media which said it was to build cars sharing the Mercedes A- and B-class platforms.

The report suggested Toyota was considering the move to better utilise the efficiency and capacity of its European plants in the long-term.

It suggested that Toyota would start using the platforms in 2018, when the follow-up models to the upcoming A- and B-class models were introduced.

Mercedes and Toyota were also considering developing the new S-class and Lexus LS alongside one another to cut costs, according to the reports.

A Toyota spokesman in Japan denied the reports, and that they were without substance.

Daimler dismissed the news as “speculation”.
