Abarth

Abarth unveiled a glut of new models at the Frankfurt motor show – including a race-inspired Abarth 695 Competizione, which produces 180bhp.

Alfa Romeo

Alfa Romeo's Frankfurt motor show display featured the stunning 4C Concept, first unveiled at the Geneva show earlier this year. The two-seater, mid-engined sports car is unchanged apart from a new paint scheme.

Alpina

Alpina’s Frankfurt motor show star is this BMW Alpina B6 Bi-Turbo convertible, which has a top speed of 193mph and boasts 100bhp more than a regular BMW 6-series cabrio.

Artega

German manufacturer Artega displayed a 126mph electric version of its mid-engined sports car, the Artega SE. The Artega SE – which stands for ‘sports electric’ – is powered by two electric motors, which will produce 280kw (375bhp).

Aston Martin

The road car variant of the new Aston Martin V12 Zagato - which goes into production from the middle of next year - was revealed in Frankfurt. The hand-built Zagato is based on the V12 Vantage and features a body of aluminium and carbonfibre. The race-bred machine is powered by the Warwickshire-based firm's six-litre engine, which produces 510bhp and 420lb ft of torque.

Audi

Audi confirmed plans for a lightweight, all-electric successor to the A2 — six years after the pioneering first-generation model ceased production and also showed off its Urban and NILS Concepts and hardcore S models. Audi's latest DTM contender made its appearance at Frankfurt, too, as did three other new cars, including the R8 e-tron and A1 2.0TDI model.

Anyone familiar with the second-generation Continental GT, launched a year ago, will recognise the latest GTC’s sharper styling lines, unveiled at Frankfurt.

Bugatti

The one-off Bugatti L’Or Blanc model - shown at the show - is clad with porcelain inside and out in a joint venture with German porcelain manufacturer Königliche Porzellan-Manufaktur.

The striking Cadillac Ciel concept car, which was first spied at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in California last month, is an “open-air, grand-touring car inspired by the natural beauty of the California coast,” according to the firm.

Chinese car maker Chang'an showed off four models at this year's show. There were two concepts: the sleek-looking Sense and the Chang'an SUV, which is a petrol-powered five-seater, and the Eado saloon, plus the Clover electric machine.

The all-wheel-drive Chevrolet Miray concept broke cover on European soil for the first time at the Frankfurt motor show. And the Chevrolet Malibu, which will go on sale in Europe next year, was also a star of the manufacturer’s Frankfurt motor show display.

The new Chrysler 200 convertible-based Lancia Flavia Cabrio was unveiled at the Frankfurt motor show. The Turin-based firm has put it into production after being encouraged by the response to a concept version shown at Geneva in March.

Citroen

The final production version of the new Citroën DS5 also broke cover at the Frankfurt motor show. The DS5 will usher in the HYbrid4 technology the French firm shares with sister marque Peugeot. The firm's second car - the wacky Tubik - is inspired by the TUB and Type H light vans produced by Citroën for more than four decades from 1939. According to the manufacturer, the Tubik has been designed as an “executive shuttle with an emphasis on comfort and fun”.

Eterniti

New British car company Eterniti Motors showed off its first model, the Hemera. The Hemera, which Eterniti refers to as a ‘the world’s first super-SUV’, will go into production next year.

Ferrari

The new Ferrari 458 Spider is the first Ferrari fitted with a folding hard roof to a mid-engined two-seater.

Fiat

Fiat says its new Panda has reached ‘full maturity’ in the third-generation car. The Italian company says the latest evolution of the car has made a “qualitative leap in comfort, technology and safety equipment, and has a modern, harmonious look”.

Based on today’s Karma saloon, the new Fisker Surf is built around the same range-extended electric drivetrain and aluminium spaceframe structure. The new model will go on sale next year and be built alongside the Karma at the Valmet factory in Finland. No details have been released but it’s expected to cost about £90,000.

Making the biggest stir at the Ford stand was the new Focus ST. The 247bhp model will be available as an estate and goes on sale in 2012. Also shown was the hearty Fiesta ST and Ford Evos Concept.

Honda

Honda is promising much-improved dynamics and a higher-quality interior for the new, ninth-generation Civic, which has made its debut at the Frankfurt motor show and will go on sale in the UK on October 1. The firm also revealed the new 96g/km CO2 Insight.

Infiniti

The Infiniti FX50, designed in conjunction with Sebastian Vettel, has performance and styling tweaks and will be produced in limited numbers when it goes on sale next year.

Jaguar

Jaguar's show-stopping C-X16 will cost between £55,000 and £70,000 when it goes on sale. Its hybrid drivetrain helps it to sprint to 62mph from standstill in just 4.4sec, and on to a top speed limited to 186mph.

The hardcore Jeep SRT8 4x4 is powered by a new 6.4-litre Hemi V8 unit, which serves up a heady 464bhp and 465lb ft of torque, up by 49bhp and 45lb ft compared with the previous car’s 6.1-litre lump.

Another star car was the stunning new Kia GT concept, which will reach production in 2013. The V6-powered Kia GT, shown as a concept car, will be built after the manufacturer’s current range of six mass-market models have all been overhauled. The Korean manufacturer also showed off a new three-door variant of the Rio and a facelifted Soul.

Land Rover

Two new Land Rover Defender Concepts included the previously seen DC100 concept and also a shock new arrival, the ‘cool’ version of its DC100 Defender replacement concept. The second concept is aimed at demonstrating the image and design flexibility that it intends to build into the new model, which is due in 2015

Lamborghini

Lamborghini unveiled its most uncompromised Gallardo on the eve of the Frankfurt motor show: the LP570-4 Super Trofeo. Top speed is almost 200mph and 0-62mph takes just 3.4sec.

The fourth-generation Lexus GS 450h gets new styling tweaks and an 18 per cent fuel economy improvement to 44.8mpg and CO2 emissions below 145g/km.

The Lotus Exige made a welcome return as a lightweight, high-performance supercharged V6 sports car. Also on show at Lotus, the Exige Rally car and Evora GTE.

Maserati

The Maserati Kubang SUV concept is the firm's answer to the success of the Porsche Cayenne. The sleek four door integrates Maserati's trademark rear haunches into a coupé-esque body with a shallowly raked rear.

Mazda

Mazda’s CX-5, its first production car to come equipped with both its radical range of SkyActiv chassis, engine and transmission technologies and its new Kodo design language, was revealed at the Frankfurt motor show. Powering the CX-5 will be a new 173bhp, 310lb ft 2.2-litre turbodiesel engine.

New form Mercedes-Benz was its concept F125. It's a preview for the evolution of the S-class luxury saloon that promises 105mpg fuel economy and is billed as a rolling laboratory for the sort of driveline Mercedes expects to include in future luxury cars. Also on show was the the new B-class, SLS Roadster and we also got news about the firm's plans with Infiniti.

The Mini Coupé is a strict two-seat fastback that promises to be the most dynamically capable Mini yet.It's based on the Mini cabriolet and will come in four model variants: the entry-level Cooper, the Cooper S, the Cooper SD and the range-topping John Cooper Works (JCW).

Peugeot’s new hybrid 508 RXH flagship was showcased at the Frankfurt show. The car is a high-riding 508-SW-based crossover that’s likely to cost in excess of £30k. We also saw Peugeot's stunning vision for a 2020 MPV at the unveil of the unconventional new six-seat HX1 concept at the Frankfurt motor show.

Porsche

The all-new and long-awaited Porsche 911 was officially revealed at Frankfurt. Penned under Porsche design boss Michael Mauer, the latest 911 — codenamed 991 — sticks with the tried and trusted formula of subtle design changes rather than a ground-up rethink. The two launch models will be the Carrera and Carrera S.

Renault’s Frankfurt motor show star was this radical Frendzy concept, the fourth of seven design concepts from the French firm, as it attempts to carve out a bold new design language for its future production cars, based around the human life cycle. The French company also brought us the facelifted Twingo.

Rimac

Croatian manufacturer Rimac Automobili has produced an 190mph electric super car called the Rimac Concept One, which was on display for the first time at Frankfurt.

Seat

Seat indicated its future design direction with this plug-in hybrid sports saloon concept, dubbed the IBL.Seat describes the IBL, which bears a family resemblance to the Volkswagen Passat CC, as a crossover between a saloon and a sports coupé.

Skoda’s new MissionL concept car previews a crucial new model that will be key to the Czech firm’s ambitious growth plans when it enters production next year. The car will be sold in Europe, Russia and China, with a separate four-door version for India on-sale by the end of the year.

Smart

The biggest new car from Smart was the electric Forvision - a car that hints at the styling and technology that will be a feature of the next generation of Fortwo city cars. Features of the concept include plastic wheels and ‘e-textile’ seat coverings. Smart also teamed up with street fashion house WeSC to create the special edition ‘Smart Brabus tailor made by WeSC’.

Ssangyong

The new Ssangyong Concept XIV 1 - revealed for the first time at the Frankfurt motor show - is described by the Korean company as a 'premium crossover utility vehicle'. The B-segment design will combine supermini dimensions with a high-seating position.

The main star of the show from the Subaru stand came courtesy of the Subaru BRZ. The Frankfurt concept is a development of the clear plastic-bodied concept at this year’s Geneva motor show. The car helped showcase Subaru’s involvement in the coupé it has co-developed with Toyota.

We also reported that the new BRZ coupé will only be available with a normally aspirated engine and rear-wheel drive.

The new Suzuki Swift Sport - shown at Frankfurt - is powered by a 1.6-litre petrol engine linked to a six-speed manual gearbox, and produces 134bhp at 4400rpm and 118lb ft of torque. Styling changes include a larger front grille and more aggressive bodywork and 17-inch alloys and a revised exhaust system, which "yields a sportier note."

The production-ready Toyota Prius+ MPV and Prius plug-in hybrid were shown off at the Frankfurt motor show, along with a refreshed Avensis. The Prius+ will be the first seven-seat full hybrid available in Europe and the plug-in Prius will be significantly cleaner, with a claimed figure that could be as low as 49g/km of CO2.

Vauxhall was the latest manufacturer to outline its future vision for affordable personal urban mobility with this radical concept car at the Frankfurt motor show. The firm describes the as-yet-unnamed concept as having “production potential”, claiming it could “revolutionise urban transport, especially for younger drivers and those on a very tight budget”.

VW's vision for personal urban mobility in 2030 was this one-seat electric car concept. Despite some outlandish concept car features and futuristic looks, VW insists the Volkswagen NILS concept is “anything but a dry-run exercise” and is a “very realistic proposition” for a commuter car in 2030.

The German firm also revealed a barrage of Up concepts, including an Up GT and the VW R Concept.

Volvo

Volvo gave the clearest indication yet of its intentions to build a premium rival for the Mercedes-Benz CLS and Audi A7 with this swoopy new fastback saloon concept. Called Concept You, the five-metre-long model is an evolution of the controversial Concept Universe unveiled at the Shanghai motor show earlier this year.

Yo-Auto

Russian carmaker Yo-Auto revealed its latest concept in Frankfurt. The sleek Yo-Concept - which is amongst a trio of hybrid vehicles from the new firm - has been designed to pave the way for future production models and includes innovative doors, which slide up and back through the car’s exterior to ease passenger access. Another new offering is the Yo-crossover.
