Facelifted coupe and cabriolet models also get cleaner and more powerful engines

BMW has upgraded the 3-series coupé and convertible with cosmetic changes to bring the cars into line with the look of the saloon, along with new, more efficient engines.

The exterior changes include new lights, a new grille and splitter, and restyled sill covers. New bumpers make the cars slightly longer.

But it’s the engines that feature the biggest changes. The 320d’s 2.0-litre diesel powerplant now has 181bhp, up by 7bhp, and 280lb ft of torque. It’s slightly faster, with a 0-62mph time of 7.5sec, and emits 125g/km of CO2.

The six-cylinder diesel gets the same power increase and a cut in its 0-62mph time, which now comes in just under 7.0sec.

The six-cylinder petrol engine in the 335i is the new single-turbo unit from the 5-series GT; power and torque are unchanged from the previous twin-turbo engine at 302bhp and 295lb ft, but fuel consumption and CO2 emissions are both reduced.

BMW has also launched a new diesel model for the saloon and Touring ranges. The 318d gets a 141bhp 2.0-litre engine that, in the saloon, gives 62.8mpg and 119g/km of CO2.

Prices for the revised coupé start at £27,485 for the 320i SE, an increase of £1180, and the convertible now starts at £32,095, £835 more than the current car. The price of the M3 coupé has also increased by £1795, to £52,730. All of the revised models go on sale at the end of March.

To say people would be a 'thicko' because they compare the BMW 3-series coupe/conv' to the Mercedes E-class coupe/conv' shows your lack of understanding of the Mercedes. You say the Mercedes E-class coupe/conv' (which people were comparing the BMW with) is a much bigger car, well it isn't. For a comparison, body width, BMW: 1.78m, Mercedes: 1.78m which is the same. For the length, BMW: 4.61m, Mercedes: 4.69m. So there you have it, same body width and the Mercedes is only 8cm longer. The reason is the Mercedes coupe/conv' are actually based on the C-class, so people are right to compare the them. (Sorry for lack of paragraphs, Google Chrome and Autocar don't go together well).

That's the whole point, the changes are meant to be subtle so as to preserve an already iconic shape and maintain second hand values of the existing model, this in the long run keeps everybody happy.

Also thank goodness it doesn't look anything like the overly agressive offerings from Mercedes or bland mobiles from Audi.

The 3 series is the number one coupe in Europe for a reason, nice styling, fantastic to drive, very comfortable, economical to run (only £300 for 5 year/60,000 mile service pack) and extremly reliable backed up by the best service network bar none.

I used to think BMW had nice designs - now they are all just boring and the same - a new 7 series passed me on the motorway and in the mirror you couldnt tell if it was a 3 a 5 or a 7 - how about some individuality BMW - for their saloons, instead of having "series" - they should just call it the BMW saloon in sizes S, M and L.

Now BMWs are Boring and Uncomfortable.
