World championship leader Jenson Button again struggled in the Brawn GP car and was 17th fastest, but he was within a second of Hamilton’s time. His team mate and winner last time out in Hungary Rubens Barrichello was just behind Button in 18th.

Ferrari driver Luca Badoer again struggled for pace in the Ferrari and was 2.010 secs behind Hamilton’s quickest lap. He was just under a second behind Nico Rosberg in the Williams in 19th.

In the first rain-affected free practice session earlier in the day, Toyota driver Jarno Trulli topped the time sheets ahead of Button and Renault’s Fernando Alonso.
