Nottingham's workplace parking plans could be threatened in court

Campaigners could mount a legal challenge against a work parking space levy.

Nottingham City Council plans to become the first local authority in the country to introduce a workplace parking levy (WPL) from 2012.

Initially, the council will impose a charge of £180 a year per space on employers with more than 10 parking spaces. The charge will rise to £350 over two years, and it is within the righst of the employer to pass the charge on to ist workers.

However, George Cowcher, the chief executive of Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Chamber of Commerce, told the Daily Telegraph: “We have opposed this for the past seven years.

"We are pleased it is delayed until 2012 but clearly there will still be an effect. There is a variety of things we could do – a legal challenge might be one of them.”
