Ex-F1 ace says over-70s should be be retested every five years

Sir Stirling Moss wants over-70s to have to retake their driving tests.

The motor racing legend told BBC Wales that pensioners should be retested every five years so they can keep up with ever-evolving road conditions.

Moss, 79, said, “I do think older drivers should be re-evaluated because first of all, a lot of the road signs are changing and the road ethics are changing and the way the roads are formed.

“There are many things one has to keep up with. I think it would be a good idea to have a new evaluation when we reach 70, then 75, 80.”

Elderly drivers currently have to declare their medical conditions to the DVLA when they reach 70.

Department of Transport evidence shows that accidents involving older people are likely to be caused by driver error and slower reaction times, but there is no evidence to suggest older people are more likely to have an accident than any other age group.
