1.4-litre TSI Twincharger wins coveted annual industry award

VW has won the coveted Engine of the Year award for its 1.4-litre TSI Twincharger unit.

The engine is used by VW across much its range, including in the Golf, Scirocco and Eos, and it can also be found in the Seat Ibiza Cupra.

Dean Slavnich, editor of Engine Technology International and co-chairman of the International Engine of the Year Awards, said: “The international judging panel is hugely impressed by this VW engine. It’s a masterstroke of downsizing technology and a real engineering showcase.

“I have no doubt that this engine will become the template for a whole new generation of high efficiency, small capacity engines in the years to come.”

German powertrain technology scooped 11 of the 12 awards available at the annual event, held this year at the Engine Expo event in Stuttgart.

VW’s 1.4-llitre TSI Twincharger was also named as the Green Engine of the Year and Performance Engine of the Year went to Mercedes-AMG for its 6.2-litre unit found in the CLK, S- class, SL, CL, CLS and ML.

Porsche claimed the Best New Engine of 2009 award for its 3.8-litre flat-six found in the 911.
