Potential buyers evaluate Vauxhall plants

Officials from Magna International have today toured the Vauxhall factories in Ellesmere Port and Luton that they are hoping to buy.

The officials from Magna, which is GM and the German government's preferred bidder for Opel and Vauxhall, are due to hold meetings with union officials amid heightening uncertainty about Vauxhall's future.

'I'm quite sure my colleagues will be engaging Magna in a debate," said Dave Osborne, Unite's national officer for vehicle building and automotive issues.

Magna officials are currently touring all Vauxhall and Opel plants, as they try to evaluate how to cut over-supply that they meaure as they equivalent of the output of three plants.

The plants in Bochum and Eisenach in Germany and Antwerp in Belgium are believed to be the least efficient in the Vauxhall/Opel portfolio.

However, there are concerns that the German government's bridge loan to keep the company afloat during its sale means that Magna won't close plants in the country, and will instead target the Vauxhall plants.
