US version of world's cheapest car will meet all saftey and emissions targets

Tata Motors has confirmed that it will launch the Nano in the US within three years.

David Good, a US representative for the Indian manufacturer, confirmed the launch date following comments made by the firm’s chairman Ratan Tata in a speech at a US university last week.

He said the Nano was likely to arrive in the US by 2012, and that it would meet all North American emission and crash standards.

Good said that the Nano could be distributed in the US through Jaguar and Land Rover dealerships, which Tata owns, or by creating a new dealership network.

A European version of the Nano is set to arrive in 2011 and deliveries in India, where the car costs around £1500, are set to begin next month following the results of a lottery.
