Figures also show most buyers are middle-aged

More than 90 per cent of UK car dealers have reported an increase in enquiries on new cars due to scrappage, and the majority of buyers are middle-aged, new research has found.

The Retail Motor Industry Federation (RMIF) also said 63.7 per cent of those buying under the scheme are aged 45 to 60 while
27.1 per cent are aged 31 to 45.

Almost half of the cars being bought with scrappage are between £6000 and £8000, and 22.1 per cent are priced between £8000 and £10,000. Most have engines between 1.0 and 1.3-litres.

Jeremy Bennett, Automotive Management editor, said: “It’s clear the scrappage scheme has released pent up demand which had built up as result of uncertainty as we waited for a decision on a scrappage scheme.”
