New seven-seater influenced by classic 505 estate

Peugeot has unveiled its new 5008 people carrier, which it says draws influence from the classic seven-seat 505 estate.

The 4.53m-long model has seating for seven. The seats in the second row can be reclined individually, and the back row folds flat to give 2506 litres of luggage capacity.

The front passenger seat also folds into a ‘shelf configuration’ to allow long objects to be loaded as far as the dashboard.

The 5008 will be available with three different engines in various states of tune. The line-up includes a 156bhp 1.6-litre petrol unit delivering 39.7mpg, and a 150bhp diesel returning 48.7mpg.

The features list includes a head-up display that shows speed and distance alerts, and ‘Snow Motion’, a traction control system designed to make it easier to drive on snow and ice.

The 5008 will go on sale in the UK at the beginning of next year.

Prices are likely to start at around £15,000.

Add in a slice of discount plus scrappage allowance and i'm thinking you could put a base model on the road for about £12.5K? A lot of car for the money.

Scrappage? January next year? - rumours have it that nearly half the money has been spent already (ignore the "official" figures that the government are bandying about, these must have been on day one, as most dealers had been taking orders since 23rd April). The money will run out by September at the latest.

Saying that, I think the 5008 is one of the best looking Pugs for a long time. Gone is the awful grille (Renault seem to be copying it on the mid-term facelift of the Laguna). Yes is is obviously based on the C4 Picasso, but is none the worse for that.

Looks great - not quite as distinctive as the current Peugeots but perhaps the rest of the range will grow to dispense with the big mouth. I think it looks very classy, classier than the C4 Picasso upon which it is based. Those rear lights are rather Citroen C6-ish as well! Nice one, Peugeot. This will sell.

How fast can it go ? From the angle of the windscreen it looks as if it was built to do 200 mph.
