Alfa Romeo announces shortlist of twelve names for public vote

We’re all for a bit of democracy here at Autocar. That why the news that Alfa Romeo isn’t spending a five figure sum on a focus group scheme to decide the name of its new Mini-rivalling supermini came as a welcome surprise.Instead, it's allowing the general public to decide what its new upmarket hatchback, hitherto referred to as the Junior, will be called. And you can have a say.Last month, Alfa Romeo opened the contest to all of Italy, France, Spain, Germany, England and Japan, and challenged all and sundry to come up with a name for the new car. Yesterday it announced the second phase of the competition, as part of which it has selected a shortlist of 12 names, two from each country, for everyone to vote on. The full list of potential names is below; to cast your vote, click here. The UK vote is being held in collaboration with Top Gear, but to hell with petit commercial differences; the future name of a potentially great Alfa Romeo is at stake here, and there are prizes to be won. In case you’re in any doubt, that name shouldn’t be Enos. Our only confusion is to why Alfa’s classic ‘Junior,’ ‘Giulia’ and ‘Giulietta’ names aren’t there to vote for. Here's the list, along with a few notes of translation that we looked up. Voting ends on 15 November.Agea EnosEverso (Latin for 'destroyer')FiraFuriosa (which means 'mad' in Italian)MiloModNevoSolea ('festive' in Latin)Sparvo (which translates from Latin as 'scatter')VelvettaVentura (Italian for a 'soft breeze')

Re: Help to name Alfa’s new ‘Junior'

Must admit I think sticking with Junior is the way forward, the first car that really made me understand the magic of driving over just travel was a Giulia 105 GT Junior.

The Gav, having posted first and thought later (not the best way round I've often thought), I too think that Junior is an apt name for the car. Whatever name is given, at least it will look the part and hopefully drive as well!

Re: Help to name Alfa’s new ‘Junior'

I don't like any of the suggested names but if it can't be 'AlfaSud' (maybe they're holding it back for the 147 replacement), then why not retain 'Junior' - it's cheeky, it's apt and it has heritage Shoot the PR department and listen to us elderly Alfanistas ;)>
