Double F1 world champion and Woking F1 team announce end of their relationship

Double F1 world champion Fernando Alonso has confirmed that he will leave McLaren at the end of the season, after only one year of his three-year contract with the team. The Spaniard's relationship with the team had deteriorated in the second half of the season, culminating in a row with McLaren boss Ron Dennis at the Hungarian Grand Prix, when Alonso threatened to go to the FIA with fresh information concerning McLaren's alleged use of Ferrari design documents. However, despite hinting strongly earlier in the year that he felt he was not receiving the same equipment as his team-mate, Alonso said today, "people say a lot of things in the heat of battle, but in the end I was always provided with an equal opportunity to win. Since I was a boy I had always wanted to drive for McLaren, but sometimes in life things do not work out. I continue to believe that McLaren is a great team."Red Bull and Toyota are among the teams chasing Alonso's signature for 2008 and beyond, but his most likely option is said to be a return to the Renault team that brought him his two driver's titles. Finn Heikki Kovalainen could leave the French team to make way for Alonso, perhaps swapping seats to join Lewis Hamilton at McLaren for 2008.

Re: Alonso to leave McLaren

From what I've heard there are people in Renault who would want him back. Let him go.

I can't believe the spanish government got involved in the whole Hamilton/Alonso thing. Can you imagine smiley Tony or grumpy Gordon getting so wound up with the whole situation they felt they needed to make sure everyone was playing fair!! Thought not.

Re: Alonso to leave McLaren

Alonso believes he is the best and cant handle that a rookie is right up there with him. I suppose he had a right to expect to be number 1 but ultimately if there had been preference given that Hamilton was ahead of Alonso most of the season surely Hamilton should have had preference if the team was to get a title. MacMerc are best rid of Alonso, he can be number 1 in another team where I am sure he will be successful and at the end of the day he is probably the second best wheelman out there. Raikonens performance in the latter part of the season should be what Alonso looks at, thats how to show you are the number one in the team.
