Top traffic cop to lose his licence?

Calls for the resignation of Meredydd Hughes, Britain's most senior police traffic officer, have been made after it has emerged that the Head of UK Roads Policing is facing a charge of speeding at 90mph in a 60mph limit. The alleged offence took place while Hughes was on holiday, driving along the A5 near Chirk in North Wales. He has been summoned to appear at Wrexham Magistrates Court on 21 November.Like his predecessor Richard Brunstrom, Med Hughes has adopted a hardline, pro-speed camera agenda since taking charge of road policing for ACPO (the Association of Chief Police Officers). In June he argued that speed cameras should be made “less conspicuous to motorists”. He’s now being accused of hypocrisy by motoring organisations and road safety campaigners alike.Back in 2006, Hughes gave an exclusive interview to Autocar in which he admitted to having six points on his driving licence already. He now stands to lose the right to drive altogether, and if he does, resignation from his job must surely be inevitable.
