Hans-Joachim Stuck says firm wants to be an engine supplier, not a works team, from 2013

Volkswagen has confirmed it is eyeing a role in Formula One as an engine supplier, not as a team owner, if it enters the sport as expected from 2013.

That is according to former grand prix driver Hans-Joachim Stuck, who is now VW's motorsport representative.

Stuck told German magazine Sport Bild "it is clear that we are looking at Formula One," but that VW is "waiting for the FIA's decision in respect of the use of a world engine”.

Stuck also confirmed that VW would not have "[its] own team like Mercedes".

F1 is expected to switch to turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder engines mated to KERS from 2013, but the sport is also keen on improving the efficiency of the current 2.4-litre V8 units in the mean time.

Re: VW confirms F1 intentions

Seems feasible. The (probable) introduction of boring four pot turbos coinciding with the worlds' most tedious motor manufacturer seems like a match made in heaven.

Perhaps they consider a diesel and a soft touch interior.

CART has not been in existence for a couple of years. However, the IRL (into which it merged) is looking at new engine and chassis at the present time. Thought you should be updated.

F1 is expected to switch to turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder engines mated to KERS from 2013 Why not make F1 totally green, why bother with 1.5 litre engines. Scrap engines altogether and use go-karts down the hill at Goodwood. my oh my, let the legislators ruin the sport, has anyone forgotten how much more economical cars are these days, until we actually produce cars that pass back energy to the national grid nobody will be happy. My idea would be restrict all F1 teams to a chassis weight 45 litres of fuel and total innovation on the design front, now that would be interesting.
