Fiat/Chrysler boss predicts French company is looking for a partner

Fiat and Chrysler boss Sergio Marchionne has predicted PSA Peugeot-Citroen will be the next car maker to enter into a merger with a rival.

"The next merger will probably be French," Marchionne told Automotive News. "They tried with Mitsubishi and they will try with someone else."

PSA Peugeot-Citroen ended talks over a proposed equity swap with Mitsubishi last month.

PSA Peugeot-Citroen currently has an engine partnership with BMW, and both parties said earlier this year they were exploring other areas where they can co-operate.

Daimler and Renault-Nissan last week announced a tie-up to share platforms, drivetrains and engines as part of a massive cost-saving push.

Marchionne's Fiat acquired 20 per cent of Chrysler in June.

Re: Peugeot-Citroen 'next to merge'

The 1.4 -1.6 petrol are BMW in terms of design (except several specifities).

The V6 Diesel are Ford in terms of design.

The development costs are shared.

I think if they merge its likely to be with someone with whom they dont compete, like BMW, or maybe Jaguar/Land Rover

The Jaguar/Land Rover idea seems like a smart move to my eyes, as it would allow JLR to produce their own iQ/Cygnet-style retrimmed/rebadged version of a proven small hatchback, and (presumably) TATA could provide PSA with an improved sales network in India in order that they can sell PSA cars to customers wanting something a bit more upmarket than a TATA Nano.

f there is a God, as I believe there is (and let's not open that can of worms), the 0-series will never make it off the drawing board, along with all these other hair-brained ideas for FWD BMWs. A PSA-Mini tie-up already exists, there's no need to go further. Perhaps engine development would be a good idea, though. BMW has some fantastic engines and Peugeot could do worse than get their hands on them

BMW have got their hands on Peugeot/Citroen engines you must mean. The MINI uses their engines, petrol and diesel. Do not forget that Ford's European cars all use Peugeot/Citroen diesel engines, some made in Dagenham and Sweden. Volvo four cylinder diesel engines are all Peugeot/Citroen. Jaguar Diesels are all Peugeot/Citroen made in Dagenham. Mazda's and Suzuki's diesel engined cars and 4x4's have used the French engines as well.

It was Peugeot/Citroen's XUD engine of the Eighties that made diesel popular throughout Europe in the Peugeot 205, 305, 309 and 405, Citroen's BX introduced the turbo diesel to the mass market in 1987 and since diesel sales have grown to overtake petrol car sales.
