Currently reading: Spain gets scrappage boost
New car sales in Spain could reach the highest levels seen since July 2008

Spain’s scrappage scheme has given a huge boost to a previously struggling market.

In the first five months of 2009, year-on-year sales in Spain were down between 40 and 50 per cent each month. From 1 June to 24 June, new car sales in Spain have fallen by just four per cent compared to the same period in 2008.

Buyers in Spain are being offered 2000 Euros (£1700) towards the cost of a new car by the government when scrapping their old car.

So far in June, 64,308 new cars have been sold in Spain. The Spanish car manufacturers association Anfac predict sales could reach the highest levels seen since July 2008.
