Hundreds of thousands of motorists could avoid speeding fines in central London following cuts to the capital’s safety camera partnership.

The move has forced 45 members of staff to be shifted from the unit, which is responsible for operating 900 speed and red light cameras in the capital.

It is estimated the 304,324 notices of intent to prosecute handed out in the year 2008/2009 could fall to around 80,000 after Transport for London cut funding by about £2.8 million.

but didn't plod  - who are the vested interests behind these Orwellian 'Safety Camera Partnerships' - always assure that speed cameras were self-financing? or even returned a buck? could it be that in truth speed cameras were funding rafts of deadbeat, non-wealth creators, who had to have their salaries, pensions and bonuses paid for by ever inceasing numbers of 'safety' cameras and fines? pehaps when they get their P45s they can apply to be executive administrators of 'dig Britain to recovery' hole digging and filling-in Nu Start employment schemes.

“This is a return to the bad old days when drivers could speed with impunity and the number of deaths and serious injuries on London's roads were horrendously high,” said London Assembly member Jenny Jones."

Rubbish!  If ever there was a case of someone over exagerating for a sound bite!!

This is a back handed way of admitting that speed cameras don't actually work in accident reduction.
