  • Citroen could revive old badges

    Nov 04, 2009 8:28 AM

Citroen is looking at raiding its past for more inspiration for future models following the success of the revival of the DS badge.

The firm is examining the possibility of reusing the ID name, the badge used on the cheaper DS with a manual transmission, launched in 1955.

The French firm isn’t yet sure how it will apply the badge to future products, but insiders have confirmed ID is under consideration, although it could be some time before we see the results.

The Citroen SM had a V6 engine not a V8.  Another Autocar error!

Citroen has some fantastic engineering heritage and some magnificent design DNA. If they use the revitalisation of these badges to produce cars which move the world on as much as the original Traction Avant, ID, DS and SM, - swoopy, elegant things that make you gasp with wonder, and which do things in original and innovative ways - then I will be highly impressed and likely to part with money. If on the other hand they do what they've done with the DS badge on the DS3, which is basically to nail it to an utterly conventional boxy supermini, then it will be a pointless exercise.

I totally agree - the DS3  is basically just a 'Ghia' version of an ordinary car. Citroen are really wasting an opportunity here.

I've had Citroens, and have followed their progress over the years. Whilst I am sure there are some anoraks out there who will tell me I am therefore not a fully fledged car enthusiast, I have to say that I just do not remember the ID badge. To the average punter therefore, it will mean absolutely nothing, other than the monster on The Lost Planet.
However, the Pallas badge used to mean something, and that might make a useful nameplate on a luxury version of the C6. As for the 'Dolly' 2CV special version, that might bring some colour (literally if it's painted like the 2CV) to a budget C1.

I didn't realise the new "DS" had been a success. Perhaps they should have called it the Bijou and saved the DS badge for something more deserving.
