    GM CANCEL OPEL/VAUXHALL SALE

    Nov 03, 2009 10:39 PM

Breaking news just in on the BBC Website. General Motors have announced that they have cancelled the sale of Opel and Vauxhall to Magna, because of "improving business environments". Full article here... http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/8341485.stm

Must say I personally think this is excellent news for vauxhall/opel...I did fear that if sold to Magna they would end up starved of decent platforms and generally undo all of the hard work GM has put in over last 5 years. Not to mention the loss of all the european influenced models the north American market are utilising (just take a look at Ford and their turnaround if you don't know what I mean).

Well, i hate to say i told you so... But i told you so. GM has been bluffing for months, and i don't think they ever seriously intended to give up Opel. Not sure how committed they are to Vauxhall's operations, however.

The EU Commission warned on 16th October that the German government had possibly broken state aid rules by linking the bail-out money to Magna winning the bidding for Opel. The Commission also said GM should get the chance to keep Vauxhall/Opel. Funny how virtually nobody took the statement seriously.... GM will now also avoid letting Magna and the Russians get their hands on the new Epsilon 2 and Delta II platforms. That would have been a nightmare.

The US gov't/taxpayers own GM and they control the board of directors and they are not about to let the Russians get their hands on these excellent car platforms, and the Russians have been assholes with regard to Iran not supporting sanctions, so the US gov't rightfully killed the deal.  I am glad they did cause GM's european products are better engineered than their US car products,
