  • Scirocco and Golf R pricing

    Oct 30, 2009 1:40 PM

Volkswagen has confirmed the ‘R’ versions of the Scirocco and Golf will cost £26,945 and £28,930 respectively.

Fitted with a 2.0-litre TSI four-cylinder engine and a six speed manual gearbox as standard, the Scirocco R develops 261bhp while the Golf R produces 266bhp.

The Scirocco channels its power through the front wheels while the Golf gets a pre-charged hydraulic version of Volkswagen’s 4MOTION four-wheel drive system.

Lovely cars, but silly prices - whatever happened to adding in some 'free' extras when you go for the top of the range ?

I just configured a manual Golf R, metallic paint, 19" wheels, leather, phone prep and adaptive chassis control - £32,705. Ouch. Such a shame, as it's a beauty.

What annoys me about this is that I'd say for the extra 'basic' price I should at least get metallic paint, 19" wheels and leather as standard.

VW appear to have been good to their word and differentiated the Golf from the Sirocco.  It will be interesting to see which is the better car to drive, and if the four wheel drive really makes a difference with 261bhp to put down.

    It's all about the twisties....

    Way over priced.

Just specced a 'rocco at £32k and then specced a Golf R with buckets, Nav and a few other toys and it came to a frankly hair raising £37k. And lets face it, they are not going to discount these straight away.

Considering I can order a factory fresh Audi S3 (practically the same car!), with Exclusive paint, Recaro buckets, DVD Nav, Exclusive extended leather and other toys for about £32k says a hell of a lot!

I know where my money would go!

I have a TTS on order with Leather,Bose,Parking Sensors, 19",The suspension setting thingy,DSG, Bluetooth and Bum warmers and with Discount I paid 33K. 0-60 in 5.2s and its an Audi. Equivalent Golf R is £36k Agree with all other posts VW have blown it on price with this one. Leather shouldn't be a £1700 extra on a £28 grand car. All this confirms I have made the right choice.

i totally agree that the Golf R pricing is ludicrous.

but comparison to a TTS is ludicrous too.  can you put 5 people into a TTS?  the S3 is a fair comparison, but it doesn't look at good as the Golf.  Closest competition really is a Mk6 GTI with a remap, coming in at about 5k cheaper!

    Bring it!!

There are only 500 coming to the UK next year, that's an average of 2 per retailer and we've already got our first one in the bag I can only imagine what would be going through the mind of a retailer who may want to discount one.

Gotta say though the Golf R has taken even us by surprise, the price is where we were anticipating but we would like to see at least RDC510 and Adaptive Chassis Control standard, the Scirocco I think is priced and specced absolutely bob-on and our friends at the local Audi dealer agree I recon this will be the more enjoyable car to own too.

Its a fair comparison for me. I have no children and have never bought a car thinking about whether I can carry 3 people in the back. Also the TT is relatively practical. The boot is ample and when the patter of tiny feet eventually arrive the back seats will more than suffice for a few years. Also I was comparing value of specs i.e same engine, toys, leather etc. To be honest if was more concerned about carrying 4 people plus me then there are far comfier cars than a golf for £37k.

I also had a play on the configurator - just adding DSG, leather and metallic comes to £33k. The same spec Audi S3 Sportback is £3k cheaper and that's before the £2k discount. The Golf R is a great car, but not at that price. I suspect that after they've sold the first batch you'll be able to get a hefty discount in a few months time, just as you now can with the similarly overpriced GTI.

I don't understand why the Scirocco is always cheaper and better equipped than the equivelent Golf? It was the same with the Golf GTD/ GTI vs Scirocco GT with the same engine. Surely it should be the other way round? The Passat CC as an example costs more than the equivelent Passat.
