  • Government told to triple fuel tax

    Oct 26, 2009 2:38 PM

British drivers will be hit by a massive increase in motoring taxes if the recommendations of an influential environmental think-tank are accepted by the government.

The Green Fiscal Commission, which is looking into ways to help the UK meet agreed targets for CO2 reductions, is recommending that taxes on 'high carbon' activities should be dramatically increased, while at the same time other taxation is lowered.

Controversial options suggested by the Commission include a £300 tax o...Read the full article

    Oh dear!

New government on the way then?or just trying to re-coupe some money for the stockmarket bandits?!

It's bad enough trying to make ends meet, but taxing cars AGAIN!, whats that going to do?, local transport (well, round my area) is rubbish, not regular enough, too expensive and who wants to share a bus with badly behaving humans?!

It's a good job we havn't colonised other planets yet, because if we had there wouldn't be many people here that's for sure!

Interesting article by Christopher Booker in the Daily Telegraph on-line which explains the real climate change catastrophy, that of the UK and Europe ending up setting such stringent target reductions in CO2 emmissions that industrial society as we know it now will simply be unable to operate. The whole basis for the reduction in CO2 is simply based on false and, more importantly, deliberately falsified facts and statistics. I'd urge you to read the article at http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/6425269/The-real-climate-change-catastrophe.html and then make up your own mind.

I read the article from the telegraph, and it does give some information, but i also suggest reading all the reader comments underneath which also put Christopher in his place. Facts vs facts makes you appreciate that there is no real answer we can be sure of. Online comments give a perfect platform for this.

Hmmm, they are suspiciously quiet on air travel again!

I wonder how much CO2 the production of this report produced?

    It's all about the twisties....

As an example the book uses the case that Polar bears are not in trouble, their population is vastly more now than it was 40 years ago. Indicating that global warming is not happening or not a threat to polar bears. But then a reader will point out that basically it means nothing, 40 years ago there were no protection measures for the wildlife or exclusion areas and they were hunted.

The whole Co2 based climate change arguement is starting to fall apart. When (if) the politicians finally realise, can I have my taxes back please.

There are however separate issues such as deforestation and energy security which do need to be addressed.

If you haven't driven a particular car don't say you have just to prove a point. It doesn't fool anybody and is bloody annoying.

Higher taxes on new cars won't happen. The SMMT will say that it will harm new car sales, and, as with scrappage, what the SMMT wants the SMMT gets!

And then there's the little problem of selling it to the electorate.  Hardly vote-winning stuff, plus there's effect of massively increasing fuel tax on prices, inflation, the economy, etc. Are these so-called 'advisors' so detached from the real world that they can't think through the consequences?

The government have suggested massive discounts for electric cars, how else will they pay for that, they need to raise tax in a big way to pay for the electric dreams.

What we are witnessing, is the beginning of the end of ‘influential environmental think-tanks”. A last belch of venom from those whose social engineering experiment has failed.

As more people become clued up on climate change and start to ask the questions that the ‘experts’ have been avoiding for so many years (such as;  why, as water vapour constitutes 95% of the greenhouse effect and CO2 only 4% - most of it produced naturally, are you taxing those who can afford cars?)

Fewer and fewer people now believe the dire predictions of global warming. Helped no end by the fact that not one of the so called climate change models, predicted the stability of the last 10 years. Fewer still believe we are responsible for climate change.

Pronouncements such as those we have heard from The Green Fiscal Commission, will NEVER be acted upon. We know that, they know that. It is pure attention seeking from those who resent the demise in their influence.Put simply, if you eradicated all cars from the planet, the reduction, in terms of total % of greenhouse gasses produced (both natural and man made and including water vapour) would be so small that no one would notice. From a political standpoint, not even this Government (who let’s face it won’t be around for long) would dare to be so irresponsible. The sooner we start ignoring them, the sooner they will go away.
