  • BMW rules out 5-series GT M

    Oct 26, 2009 1:52 AM

An M version of the 5-series GT has been ruled out by BMW.

The performance badge has recently found its way onto the X5 and X6 SUVs in an expansion of the brand, but the 5-series GT will not be getting the same treatment.

A company source told Autocar there are no plans for a hot GT, and the range topper will remain the twin-turbo V8 550i.

BMW has previously said that an M version of the new BMW Z4 will not be made.

I presume there are only so many monied morons around to buy X6M's and X5M's ..... that they do not think there are enough minted grandards wanting a 3 tonne Rover SD1.

Is this the same people who said an X5/X6 M would never be made?

It's the mines bigger than yours mentality isn'it?, and why would you want to go really fast in a 2.5ton car, fast cars were meant to be saloon size or smaller, having sv's and mpv's that are as fast or faster is just mad, maybe in far eastern countries with long stretches of road and the occasional camel crossing like them, but not in this country, we're the governments cash cow, we pay more taxes for our cars, no over engined hot rods like this aren't needed, they can't sell many here and the ones they do will never use their potential, you could say the engine is rather an expensive option in that case ,couldn't you?, how many times would you get to use it if you stayed in LONDON for instance?.

Yes, the 5 series GT should have never been built. Period.

    It is BMW's R Class.

I'm sure that BMW will, in future, check with you first, before releasing any new car. (It's the use of the word 'period' that sealed it)
