Honda has confirmed it will put the Civic Type R Mugen into production, with just 20 cars being made for a starting price of £38,599 each.

Honda claim the price - which is around £12k more than the Ford Focus RS - is justified by the 237bhp (up on the standard Type R’s 208bhp) road racer’s bespoke production process.

Did the pound finally melt down last week without me hearing about it?

That's an awful lot of money for a Civic (I know its massively reworked) but at the end of the day, its still a Civic.  Being the best part of £40k, puts it well in the range of some pretty serious machinery (you could by a second hand E60 M5 and have nearly £8k change).

Will be interesting how they sell in these troubled times.

Did i read that right!, good god!, thirty eight and a half thousand pounds for a tarted up Civic and a few mods to the engine and suspension!,just look in the back of the mag and see what kind of metal you could buy, i'm sure James Ruppert could come up with loads of options on your folding that would be better looking, more fun,and not lose money like sand through your fingers!,even if it is a hoot to drive, would you buy one new? i wouldn't, i'd be asking James(Ruppert) for advice.

Price confirmed MUGEN Euro has set the price for the Honda Civic Type R MUGEN at £38,599 OTR.

This price includes an unparalleled purchasing experience, which involves direct contact with MUGEN engineers throughout the car‟s build. This will be a package tailored to individual customers – similar to the service offered when buying a racing car. Each of the Type Rs will be built to the customer‟s exact specification, including their choice of options. Even ECU mapping can be adjusted to suit specific customer tastes or driving style.

The price also takes into account MUGEN racing engine building expertise and heritage. Put it into context, MUGEN would typically charge around £165,000 + VAT for a full racing Type R, with the engine costing about 10 per cent of this price. Only a select few have had the chance to sit behind the wheel of a Honda-MUGEN, and even fewer have owned one, so this is an extremely unique opportunity.

There are going to be a lot of people missing the point on this car. But I can see a bunch of real track day enthusiasts who want THE best driving experience they can get, around their favourite tracks and still give them the same feeling and performance on their way home.

This is a race engineering company applying decades of expertise (right up to F1) for the ultimate visceral thrill - with the durability of a Honda road car - that's why it's special, and not everyone's going to be able to appreciate (or afford) it. And for some, turbos just don't do it, boys!

I hear they sold 300 of the Japanese 4 door Civic in 6 minutes for £30-something, and, although this car has been totally engineered for UK roads, I reckon there'll be enthusiasts across the world who will see it as good value for something so unique.

Hey up, does the up to date article say it still sports the standard engine? This looks like a MAX Power kit, all mouth and no trousers. I think I'd rather have 2 standard cars for the money. One for me, and one for the Mrs. The whole thing is a confidence trick.

 The Japanese Civic Type R doesn't have a big hole in the back to weaken the shell , neither does it have torsion beam rear suspension , so it will always be a better car for enthusiasts wanting " THE best driving experience". Has more horsepower too.

It still doesn't matter whose built the engine, it's still a lot of cash for a car that was actually slower than the previous model!,just because it's been breathed on by a respected tuner doesn't make it alright to charge this price expecting nobody to cough loudely,as other bloggers have mentioned there are far far better cars second for the money, yes, an M5,a TWO years old V8 M3 and numerous others, i know where my money would go!
