  • Mazda reveals new RX-7 plans

Mazda wants to make sportier cars and a new RX-7 is on the drawing board, the company's new design boss has revealed to Autocar.

Speaking on the eve of tomorrow's Tokyo motor show, Ikuo Maeda told Autocar that he had done sketches of an RX-7 replacement and was keen to push through a new two-seater sports car.

Sounds interesting....push the RX8 up to full GT status and stick with the 4 seat, introduce a new lighter smaller 2 seater performance coupe and then prop them both up with a (decent?) MX5 Roadster. I like the idea of using a smaller rotary engine for a new RX7 but then, I've never actually run one.

Guess what- I'm not a robot. Anyone who says I am is a liar.

I think this Mazda guy is missing the point. The last thing that anyone will want to buy in 2-3yrs time is another hideously inefficient rotary engine. The Co2 figures on those things are off the scale and won't prove popular with western buyers - especially if a showroom tax is introduced.

Good to hear them admit their interiors aren't up to scratch though - about time.

Good news, I guess. What would be even better is if the sketches bear resemblance with RX8 rather than MX5.

A modern Mazda interior is no worse and in some cases a damn site better than their rivals.

Wankel engine = high CO2 = bad idea.
