Citroen has been celebrating its 90th anniversary throughout 2009 and to mark the occasion, Autocar has been through the archives to bring you pictures of some of its most memorable models.

The French firm has built some classic cars over the years, most notably the DS and 2CV, while it has also been responsible for some of the wackiest concepts seen at motor shows.

That celebration at the Ace Café looked great fun, but such an event obviously wasn't very well advertised on Citroen's part. Citroen UK haven't really tried that hard, actually, apart from this. Just the "special offers", really. Citroen in France had a bit more going on, with some sort of party at the bottom of the Eiffel Tower and something over at the C42 all Summer. It seems you need to go to Citroen's new Facebook page to stay up-to-date with everything. Trouble is, most of the stuff concerned happens in France. Anyway, HAPPY BIRTHDAY CITROEN!

    Nice pics.

    We're painted as monsters, borracho cancado;
Do you know what the people say?
Plucked from the garden of wicked beliefs,
I offer a rose and smile through harmless teeth
Then slick back my hair, you know the Devil's in there.

Who can forget the classics like ZX, XM, Saxo and Xsara, brings a tear to my eyes.

     Some great pics...happy bithday Citroen!

To me, Citroen stands for quirkiness, style, elegance, innovation....which is why I find  a car such as the contrived, bling-laden DS3 to be such a disappointment from them. Maybe the market demands such a vehicle, but I sincerely hope it is a one off.

Some great pics- expecially since many of the concepts I hadnt seen before- have a particular fondness for the SM and the GS too -more so now than when i remember seeing them as a kid- I think for me Citroens of the 70's were when they were at thier best- but am glad they've come out with such a good current C5

Quite. One of Citroen's hallmarks - and particularly if you look back over a period ninety years - is its quirkiness. Vive la difference and all that. Where is the GS (as per 230SL's link above), spaceship CX, cheese wedge XM, magnificent Maserati engined SM? Sadly these pictures seem to focus on the bread and butter and the boring :(

I remember in the mid 80`s borrowing a friends early A reg BX and experiencing a "road to Damascus" type conversion.

From the brilliant satellite pod controls to the trick suspension to the switch like brakes this was a car totally free of conventional thinking. But what was really impressive was that it actually was better, decisively better, than the humdrum cars of the day.

Citroen, if you recapture that spirit today, you wont need to produce macho supercars or over blown design studies.

    Happy birthday anyway

Ninety years of inferior quality plastics and steep depreciation; why is Autocar marking this particular 'no-mark' occasion?

Happy Birthday Citroen!  In case my sarcasm was lost, I love the French attitude to motoring; Citroen are the off-beat alternative to establishment Renault and Peugeot.

Premium? Premium schremium! I can't get excited about a damped glovebox.

I agree - how can you leave out such a revolutionary and innovative ( as well as beautiful) car as the SM? Who wants to look at a bunch of concept cars when you could see the real things!

I took this pic, not many cars you could take two doors from and easily recognise where they came from.

Sorry I really should photoshop that post out.
