  • £70,000 Hyundai launched

    Oct 02, 2009 3:22 AM

This is the long-wheelbase Hyundai Equus saloon, which will cost £70,000 when it goes on sale in South Korea.

It is the most sophisticated, powerful and expensive Hyundai yet with power coming from a 5.0 litre V8, which produces almost 400bhp and 370lb-ft of torque.

Pic 4 - separated at birth from an S-Class? In a perverse way I find this appealing.

    Can't make up my mind

Looks good. Except for that grill. But that is being picky. I bet this article gets loads of comments along the line of 70k for a Hyundai! Who cares! haha Badge snobery is nonsense.

My initial thoughts were Maybach. The front end proportions suggest fwd.

It willl be interesting to see the quality of materials used. I'm sure this vehicle will sell in other countries but surely a £70K Hyundai would never sell in the UK?

If you think an S-Class or a 7 Series depretiates a lot I'm sure these fellas will set a record.

Nice looking car though, I agree mostly S-class /Maybach.

Why do the Koreans spend all the time aping European brands? Get you own style guys!

i would rather my Merc S class had a Merc badge than a Hyundai badge thanks.

Dont bother bringing it to europe guys, if the massively talented VW Phaeton failed so spectacularly then this has no hope.

If it comes with Hyundai 7 year warranty then its a steal! - wait for the Kia sporty version too.

This Equus looks much better than the S-Class and the Phaeton wasn't particularly talented; it was just a slightly tempremental A8.

I like this Hyundai thingy, but it'll have to be loaded-up to compete at that price.

It's effectively an improved copy without the low-rent, Mercedes brand loyalty.

    it wont compete. full stop.

it does not matter how good the individual brands are its image and heritage that count at this sort of price level in europe not electrically adjustable foot rests.

Are you seriously saying that if you were going to spend £70,000 on a motor vehicle you'd consider a Hyundai?

You must have rocks in your head! Look, let's be clear - it could be the best in class (I doubt it but let's say for argument's sake it is), it would still be a disasterous buy - the depreciation on it would be utterly frightening. Enough to make the disasterous Phaeton look like a wise investment.

Whether you do or not, the average person who spends £70,000 wants badge appeal. The better the badge appeal, the less the depreciation.

At any rate I think this is a moot point - I doubt this will be sold outside of South Korea.

For certain types - the types I referred to - it certainly won't register except to give them another badge to sneer at while wallowing around in their brand wagons, impressing fellow suburbanites, but those people are prone to overlook substance in favour of superficial values. All we can say so far is that it looks quite good and the S-Class doesn't.

Why are you bothering to blow out a load of shallow hot air, then? Since it'll never come here, let's not worry about how good this car might be, and how that would poke at the inadequacies of the sort of tragic character that buys inferior products because of the way the badge reflects on him and his wife as they pull up on the drive of their little Barratt home.
