  • BMW X6: pictures, details and video

    Dec 15, 2007 6:09 PM

These are the first official pictures of BMW’s production version of the vanguard X6 four-wheel drive coupe. The X6 will be the firm's first model to receive its new twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 petrol engine when it goes on sale late next spring.
The 90-degree unit, which will power a number of new performance-orientated BMW models in the next 12 months, is billed as a replacement for the company’s existing, normally aspirated 4.8-litre V8, in a move that underlines a commitment toward eng...Read the full article

The car industry shoots itself in the foot again. BMW does what is expected however.

Over 2000kg's of pointless metal that says everything you need to know about BMW, their target customers and this magazine which SHAMELESSLY saves BMW the cost of printing paper to promote the car.

If you thought the school run was hard now - wait for this monstrosity to appear outside little Tarquin's prep school.

It will sell - it will sell to those who know the cost of everything but the VALUE of nothing.

Autocar telling us that BMW is signalling a commitment to downsizing engines by knocking 400cc off the engine has left me completely gobsmacked. The sychophantic witterings of the 'journo' who wrote this piece leaves me in no doubt that the bias towards BMW in this mag is alive and well and completely out of kilter with the rest of the unbiased world. I can't believe that this person actually wrote that - it's hilarious.

Well yeah it is just a descriptive news story as opposed to an analytical road test or subjective column, so presumably there's only so many ways to cut and paste the BMW press pack?

"Despite the X6’s large frontal area and obvious bulk, BMW claims a drag co-efficient of 0.33"

This sentence shows a complete lack of understanding of the term drag coefficient.  It is a dimensionless unit.  A cube face flat to the wind ALWAYS has a drag coefficient of 1. what drag coefficient is is the ratio of drag of the object to the drag of a cube with equivalent frontal area. So just to recap: no, the X6's large frontal area does not make the acheivement of 0.33 Cd more impressive (or less impressive for that matter), it is completely irrelevant - a house brick could well have a higher Cd than a house!

Sorry for being so anal but I find it ever so distressing when I read stuff like this in such a fine publication.  Please oh please, if only for the sake of my fragile disposition, can the autocar journo's have some sort of "Wikipedia Wednesday Detention" for occasions like this?!

it looks pretty cool, much as expected really, a coupe like X5.

as a coupe BMW seem very keen to ensure that only 2 people can sit at the back.  the 3 series coupe does the same.  seems to be a silly invention and needlessly ruins practicality.

oh, and anyone else find the wheels on the X6 in the video too small?  need more bling!

(p.s. i'm currently watching cribs on mtv.  mr plum, suggest that you never watch this show for I would fear your blood pressure would explode)

    Bring it!!

    Hi Kee Law,

I am familiar with this genre of show.

Take one uneducated trailer trash type of individual, add a multi million dollar recording/sporting contract, mix together and watch the consequences of money mixed with little or no education, manners, upbringing and dare I say it, class.

Hang on - that sounds like the county of Cheshire.

I enjoy the show actually - there is nothing funnier than having all the gear but no idea.

    :-)

    What you talkin bout Willis?

The County of Cheshire indeed, although I think I know what you mean.

A completely pointless car, for completely pointless people.

Trust BMW to come up with something like this, problem is due to that badge it will sell. Had it got a Hyundai/Kia or similar badge, it would be shunned.

    Spot on Jon.

I suspect the car park at John Lewis in Cheadle will be full of these and Fiat 500's.

    Nasty, nasty and nasty.

I think the success of motors like the Nissan Qashqai prove that punters out there like these sorts of cars.  Mums like them because they sit high and feel their family is safe in all that metal.  Dads like them because they are chunky and have a better image than an estate.

Manufacturers like Mercedes, Porsche, Audi, Land Rover, Jeep, Volvo, Volkswagen, Hummer, Lexus, Mitsubishi, Toyota, Citroen, Kia, Mazda, etc. all do the same, please show them with the same contempt, because regardless of actual off-road ability, people will always buy these for on-road only use.

In fact why not slap a ban on "pointless people" buying "pointless cars" - what would happen?  Land Rover and Porsche would go bust.

Why stop at 4x4s?  Slap a ban on pointless Ferraris, Lamborginis, Paganis, etc.

And ban father christmas while you're at it, he's pointless too and just for stupid people sucked in by commerciality.

    Bah humbug.

    Bring it!!

They keep telling us the Qashqai is a success, but where are they? I just don't see them around. Now I see plenty of X3's and X5's.

I agree with everything else you say though!

It's nice when we can all get along.
