    Volkswagen will build a four-door notchback version of its Polo supermini in India, Russia and China and is also considering launching MPV, estate and convertible models off the same architecture.

    According to product chief Dr Ulrich Hackenburg, it’s all part of VW’s desire to win the same prominence for Polo as the Golf has in the family hatchback market.

    Surely after the recent failure of the Golf Plus MPV, and the unpopularity of the last estate and saloon models of the Polo (back in 1996), VW would have realised by now that creating all these niche products is a silly idea? All that happens is they don't sell and end up having worse residuals than the models they are based on. By buying one you loose more than you gain.

    VW should stick to the bread and butter models.
