  • New VW Polo GTi to get 200bhp

    Sep 14, 2009 6:01 PM

VW has been testing a new Polo GTI, with a power output of around 200bhp from its 1.4 litre supercharged and turbocharged four-cylinder engine, at the Nurburgring and expects to launch it late next year.

The car, likely to be sold only as a three-door, will be offered either with a six-speed stick-shift or a seven-speed DSG gearbox, the latter with the paddle-shift cheaper DSG Polo models lack.

Looks good, I hope they get it into production.  This must open the door to an "R" version of the Ibiza Cupra...

At last a Polo with a decent power output. Given VW's recent efforts I'm sure it will be a good drive too.

My wife would have liked one but not if they offer it as a 3 door only. One of the best things about the old Polo GTi was that there was a 5 door version for those who wanted something small, sporty but also have small kids that need to be put in the back.

If you haven't driven a particular car don't say you have just to prove a point. It doesn't fool anybody and is bloody annoying.

I'd buy one. The 1.4 TSI is a gem in the Golf, the new Polo is a great small car, so combine those two plus a cheeky remap and your onto a winner.

"VW product boss Dr Ulrich Hackenburg says the company has made big strides with maintaining traction in a small but very powerful, front-drive car, by careful development of an electronically controlled “limited slip differential” that uses strategic applications of its front brakes to tame wheelspin"

Thess Polo are going to smell the smoke!

Cant see it getting 200bhp. Thats way to close to the Golf GTi.

The previous Polo GTi had 150bhp so id expect this new one to have around 180bhp and a price tag starting at around £16500 for the 3dr 'stick shift'

polo gti will have 180bhp/177bhp same as the ibiza cupra. which i expect will be the same as a fabia vrs. would need a polo R to have 200bhp, same as a cupra R.

This sounds like the formula for the old Golf GTi.  Fantastic.

I hope they launch it in 5 door mode too. The Golf GTi's 5 door bodyshell is one of the reasons it has been so successful.

My biggest concern is the Nurburgring testing. What relevance does that have to road driving? Just as most 4X4 owners don't take their cars off road, most hot hatch drivers don't go near a track.

    Bunch of promise-breakers.

A Golf R36 didn't appear, woulda been much better than that 4-cyl non-event.

And where is the Fox Pepper, the hot version of the Fox???

    Vauxhall>VW

     fox pepper?

i think price is why no R36 or R30, ford made a budget RS so vw made a good value R20.

engines need to get smaller anyway, if they made more powerful golf it would an R25 same engine as the RS3.
