  • Hyundai Genesis Coupe set for UK

    Sep 11, 2009 12:51 AM

Hyundai is putting its Genesis Coupe through the final stages of technical evaluation before deciding whether to put it into production for European and UK markets.

The rear-wheel drive coupe has long been mooted for a European launch but a final decision has yet to be taken. The 5-series-sized Genesis saloon and 7-series-sized Equus are also under consideration for a UK launch.

If it came here, and was well recieved by the press it would do wonders for Hyundai's image. I am not sure there is much of a case for their bigger saloons though. They really dont have the same image boosting quality as a 'sports' coupe, however good they are.

But if the coupe does come here it would have to be cheap. With the V6 it would have a very high tax burden, and would need to look a real bargin to sell in any numbers. Think Mazda RX8.

Lets hope they do the brave thing, and bring it here. Everything i have seen about it so far suggests its the type of car we should have more of here, especially if they price it low enough.

405 Le Mans, Monaro CV8, S2000, MKX 3.8. No more space.

I have driven this (and the Genesis V8 sedan) in California. They are both pretty darn good - the Coupe reminds me a bit of a 240Z bought into the 21st century. It has nice balance and feels light on it's feet. Plenty of grunt with the 3.7(?) V6 as well
    Can't make up my mind

I happen to live in Korea and I see the Genesis Coupe quite frequently. It is a very good looking car and the 2 litre turbo version should sell very well in Europe. The Equus has come on leaps and bounds from the previous generation and looking like an S-Class (front), E-Class (rear) and 5-Series (side) it is both imposing and handsome, most notably in black. I think these cars will shake up the establishment.

This is not a good idea.

UK market are small.(also, right handle market are small)

there is no need right handle version.

becuase production facilities of right handle are expensive.

    'production facilities cost > demand'

if I am a Hyundai, i will not put right handle version of Genesis.

for UK market, i10, i20 are enough. perhaps uk people keep think 'hyundai= cheap econo car'. but,  who care? UK market are small. Just ignore them. (and BBC Top gear-hyundai hater- will end soon. IMO) ignoring is OK.

And genesis coupe/sedan are not volume seller model. hyundai should put only econo-car in UK market.

And, UK people don't want Hyundai high-end products.

    1. just ignore UK market.

    2. don't make right handle version, or sell left handle version to UK

    3. Other Europe market are OK. It is OK to sell genesis coupe/sedan to other europe. becaue they are left handle.

    Hyundai, reconsider it.

Bring Genesis to UK? Totally waste of money, Hyundai.  Narrow minded British badge snobs wouldn't change their minds. They still beilve problem-box British cars are quality vehicles. It’s much better to Invest that money to the US, Russia, India and China which are much more important and bigger markets then UK. Pls reconsider.

They already make them in Right hand drive . I have seen both these cars while on holiday and can say that they aint like what they used to be, more Lexus in quality and that is enough to scare the Big boys in Germany if they do decide to export to Europe and for Export to the UK is seen as a big step for such a low volume model.

Go on Hyundai bring out your big guns and show these badge snobs what you have to offer.

Took the words right out of my mouth!

Nissan probably makes nothing from selling the 350Z/370Z and GTR here but it's all about building image with flagship models. Press coverage, video games, TV, aftermarket tuning, drifting... Priceless publicity.

The 370Z is looking expensive now and hasn't made the impact the 350Z did... If they can sell the V6 for under £25k they can take advantage of Nissan dropping the ball.

I can imagine this car can be successful here but I think it will need decent tdi engines as well as the V6, and possibly a 2 ltr tdi as well to capture some of the business user/choosers. Also priced right, maybe model range £18 - 23k? but definitely below £25k. Apart from the premium German big 3 coupes there are only a few at the mid size affordable end, VW Scirocco/Renault Megane/Peugeot 407 and forthcoming RCZ. Ford and Vauxhall are supposedly bringing out Focus and Astra coupes with their replacements but where are the replacements for the Toyota Celica and Honda Prelude? We need some more decent affordable coupes and not just hot hatches. Go on Hyundai bring the coupe to the UK, let Lotus get their mits on it and do wonders to the suspension. Not so sure if the Genesis saloon can succeed as it's styling is too bland and probably struggle even against the established mass market D segment.

It is imperative that Hyundai bring this car to the UK. I for one am getting a bit bored of hot hatches now and would really like an affordable coupe, as I bet many people would (say around the £20k mark)? It used to be a very large segment here in the UK, with the Celica, Prelude, 200SX and countless others and its about time they made a come back. I'll be putting my name down for one of these should they make it over here, assuming the following:

    - 2.0 litre turbo engine would be far more suited to over here (would need to have fuel economy and emmissions comparable to a hot hatch (at least 30mpg combined cycle and CO2 under 200g/km). An auto option would also be good.

    - As mentioned, suspension would need tuning for over here to avoid an overly harsh ride which would put buyers off.

    - Price is all important. Really needs to compete with current hot hatches, so around the price of the current SIII (£20k ish I reckon). There'd be no point if it was priced in the same league as the German coupes or cars like the Nissan 370Z.

I know I am a little late commenting, but, BRING IT ON HYUNDAI.

As the owner of another under rated stigma attached flag flyer, the Calibra V6, we need the Genesis here in Britain. In all engine combinations too.

I also own a 2005 Hyundai Elantra CRDT CDX, which was bought through necessity after our 2004 Multipla died an electrical death that was to cost more than it was worth to repair.

I know what Top Gear says about Korean cars, but i was mega surprised with the Elantra. Full leather interior, adequate power, and what surprised me is how well its screwed together. Its a real nice cabin in there. I would never have even looked at it in a car lot as i headed for vauxhall or ford, and I tell you what its better inside than both!!! In fact i would defy anyone to guess what they were in if the badges in the cabin were covered over, Vaux, Ford, BMW, Audi? Its better than the first two and not far off the second.

Yeah the outside looks a bit '90s and it doesnt handle like a sports car, but then it isnt a sports car its a family saloon and the handling is more than adequate for town and motorway journies. Its very quiet at speed too.

So if the Genesis is better than this and with Hyundais long warranties and competative pricing it will be a winner, watch out big guns. Happy Days.

    Under rated doesn't mean bad
