The Vauxhall Ampera could cost from £24,500 when it goes on sale in the UK in the first quarter of 2012.

Opel’s managing director Hans Demant made the claims in an interview with a Swiss news outlet, Tages-Anzeiger.

Demant claimed that for the Ampera to be a commercial success, it must not cost more than a fully-specced Vauxhall Zafira with automatic transmission.

The top-of-the-range Zafira SRi 1.9 CDTi costs just shy of £25,500 when equipped with an auto’ box in the UK. Th...Read the full article

Well, we always knew that price was going to be a problem....at those levels, you can get a nice BMW 320d with efficent dynamics included.

No mention that it is an Astra-size car - so why not compare it to Astra prices?

Twenty five grand for a Zafira? GM's already come up with the perfect car for idiots. They don't need the Ampera.

To be honest the price is less than I was expecting. A well speced diesel Astra can be £20k easy so I don't think this is too bad. I'll be interested to see what the leasing costs are.

If you haven't driven a particular car don't say you have just to prove a point. It doesn't fool anybody and is bloody annoying.

How many top spec Zafiras do you see,not many as most go for Life spec as its in the middle,£24000 for a Astra sized car no way. This car needs to be selling at £16000 up depending on spec if it is going to make money with top spec Ampera's going for £24000.

If they seriously want a starting price at £24000 then they had better glue a Merc or BMW badge on it.

Yes indeed. But then, only idiots would buy it.

You’re not buying ornamentation; you’re buying state of the art 1st generation technology. The price will be high initially and those of you that balk at the cost are not likely to be early adopters anyway.
