  • Jaguar XF tops sales chart

    Sep 02, 2009 8:10 AM

Jaguar’s XF saloon is continuing to steal sales from rivals, despite the weak new car market.

Detailed figures obtained by Autocar show that the XF is outselling all of its saloon rivals in the UK — and the margin is growing. It took 60 per cent of the UK’s executive saloon market in July; earlier this year it was closer to 50 per cent.

“We’ve been working on residuals and keen pricing and equipment levels and that’s continuing to work for us,” says Jaguar.

I am really glad the Jag XF is selling and people are buying, it's a great car and I hope this continues with the XK and XJ

As long as the pricing is competitive and more importantly, the product is well engineered and reliable, the Jag brand will hopefully have a much brighter future.

    +1

And this result is very impressive considering the lack of an estate and 4 pot

    Good on 'em

Well done Jaguar, now sort the points you yourselves have highlighted about the lack of a four banger engine and an estate.

Considering the links Ratan Tata has to Fiat the new engine that's just gone in the Alfa 156 would be a good starting point.

    It's all about the twisties....

I dunno, I can really understand the need for a four pot engine but I'm not convinced I would like to see one in the XF.  I know I am speaking from the heart and not my head but I'd prefer to see a smaller car with the smaller engine.  But then again, Jaguar is a company trying to make a profit, not merely to indulge my wishes

An estate XF....I'm warming to the idea

Great effort, would love to see how it's doing in other markets as for Jaguar to have a viable future they need to be selling to all markets, not just the British market.

I'd love to be able to consider the XF but as noted without an estate body and 4WD (which I can get on the 5 series, E class and of course A6) it's not a viable option.

There was a time when Autocar was reporting magnificent XF sales figures, but I'd seriously seen only one example parked outside a wine bar. However, I can now report that they're bloody everywhere, presumably a result of the cut-price leasing deals Jaguar are currently offering - proving once again that fairy money is an integral part of the British economy. Still, it is great to see a British car on the roads and the new Ford/PSA 3.0 twin-turbo diesel should keep it popular. Let's hope the businesses and jobs stick around to pay the monthlies, eh?

Can someone at Jaguar explain how coming 3rd out of 4 equates to "Topping the Sales Charts". I suspect they are covering the 6/8 cylinder market only. This just highlights the need for a 2-liter (4 or 6 cylinder)!

Totally agree! This reflects badly on Autocar's writing - another sensationalised headline... Also, do BMW and Merc offer FOUR cylinder diesels in their equivalent models?? But I still think the XF is gorgeous - how could it fail?

Yes, and while I don't have any figures I'm sure that they make up a large chunk of the sales. Most 5 series I see are 520d's for example.

Whatever the truth behind the headlines there's no doubt that Jaguar are doing well with a great car. I agree with others though that a 4 cylinder engine (2.2 PSA/Ford engine?) and estate are needed to keep the momentum going.

If you haven't driven a particular car don't say you have just to prove a point. It doesn't fool anybody and is bloody annoying.

Further proof that car manufacters really don't have much idea what sells cars.  The XF sells because it looks great and is a damn good car.  Not because of residuals or equipment levels.

If they continue to make great-looking car they'll sell; if they go back to making excruciating dross they won't.  Simple really!

Further proof that car makers really don't have much idea about what sells cars.  The XF sells because it looks terrific and is a damn good car, not because of residuals or equipment levels.  Don't the makers know a car is mainly an emotional purchase?

If the continue to make great-looking cars they'll continue to sell; if they return to making excrutiating dross they won't.  It's simple really!
