Mazda has revealed a lightweight concept car that shows one potential direction for the next generation Mazda MX-5.

The car, which is called the Mazda MX-5 Superlight version, will be displayed at the Frankfurt motor show in September.

It is described by Mazda as 'capturing the pure essence of the world’s most popular roadster, the Mazda MX-5'.

It looks fantastic. Many MX 5's are just toys, so why not go for a truely impracticle version, which is even more fun. I doubt Mazda will see a good enough reason to make any beyond this show car, which is a shame. The world would be a better palce with more mad cars like this.

Mazda, you should produce this car full stop, even if it is based on the current car.  A light weight, no screen version of the MX5 would be cheap to produce, cheap to sell and be a hit with many a budding track day enthusiast.

It's not often I say this of concept cars, but this one could hit the mark.

    It's all about the twisties....

Wouldn't fancy getting a stone chip driving with no windscreen though :)

It’s just a stripped out NB from the looks of the pictures. If you want one just pick up a nice used example, gut it of everything not needed for track days and Bob’s your Uncle as you folks say.

You could take it to the Chop Shop and have Leepu work his magic. ;)

+1. Matching cowl on passenger side, aeroscreens on top of both.
