  • AMG targets agility, not power

    Aug 05, 2009 2:42 AM

AMG’s next Black Series super-coupe will be based on the latest Mercedes E-class coupe, but it will not necessarily get vast power gains to achieve the required performance.

AMG sources say the new car will employ weight-saving techniques and fine-tuning of the mechanicals to boost the car’s ability. The emphasis will be on improving the car’s agility rather than outright speed.

There will not be a regular AMG version of the E-class coupe, and a Black Series C-class saloon has bee...Read the full article

The source also said there are no plans to use the seven-speed Speedshift MCT gearbox from the E63 and SL63 in the C63, despite the fact that it will fit the car.

This is another appalling case of Mercedes short-changing its customers. AMG models should all be equipped with the best kit. No exception. Especially when considering the BMW M3 has a double clutch gearbox.

i dont think its short-changing at all, building in lighter weight costs  money. the materials are expensive.

    personally i would rather have a 1000kg AMG with 300bhp than a 2000kg AMG with 600bhp.

with both having the same amount of comfort and luxuries and quality etc.

same power to weight ratio, but the lighter version will be cheaper to run in fuel and in servicing and parts. and will handle much better and be in a different league of performance.

its the best way, aslong as top speed is not the priority.

but anyway AMG are going about it softly softly, they are not swaying the balance too much.

I was specifically referring to unavailability of the MCT transmission to the C63.

"AMG sources say the new car will employ weight-saving techniques and fine-tuning of the mechanicals to boost the car’s ability. The emphasis will be on improving the car’s agility rather than outright speed...........

..........The C63 AMG will get a more powerful version, though. At the moment it is the least powerful AMG, with 457bhp, but an upgraded model is on the cards."

PR bluster from AMG there, managing to contradict themselves.  They are merely saying what they think the press and the public want to hear.

    It's all about the twisties....
